Portable air quality tracker Atmotube aims to be Waze to monitor the air quality in your city. The device is a tiny tube that can be carried in a pocket or put on a key chain to monitor the air in your environment.
Atmotube links to a smartphone application that tells you if the air you breathe is toxic to your health. It measures the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide, and even cleaning agents or allergens that can affect your lungs.
Others have tried to create such devices. University of California, San Diego built a test fleet of air quality sensor, which is connected to the smartphone a few years ago called CitiSense. Intel built the device in 2010, its overall design sense, which tested the air in West Oakland.
Both were just a concept project. Atmotube the device is being manufactured for consumers.
Eventually, the impact of carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds have been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, liver and brain damage and even cancer
The application will show a number from 0 to 100 (0 means that you are dead from toxic poisons, 100 is the most fresh air) and a map of the air quality in your city from other places Atmotube been determined and entered what is happening in the environment.
Atmotube continuously measures the air quality and updates in real time. If air quality is the meaning of the device drops below a certain point, it will send an alarm signal to the smart phone. Button on the handset can be set when you take measurements or “continuous mode” to perform measurements every 10 seconds.
Battery life is also worth mentioning. It will last up to one month on a single charge, if you set Atmotube measurements every 60 seconds. Less measure means a longer charge, in accordance with the Atmotube.
So how does it work? Co-founder of Faith Trump air quality tests for me in the studio TechCrunch. We clocked at about 60-70, depending on where we were in a room. Not bad, but not great either, according to Trump.
“You will eventually have to leave the room or to crack a window, or you get a headache,” she later told me.
She also drove a map of air quality in San Francisco. Soma district seemed to be all right, like most parts of the city, but North Beach was red hot air pollution, in accordance with Annex Atmotube.
The device is actually a side business of the Russian production company hardware IoT NotAnotherOne, where Trump is credited for the invention Yotaphone, dual-screen smartphone is used in Europe.
Trump and her co-founder, Igor Mikhnenko that runs on UX design and helped to develop Yotaphone NotAnotherOne, said that they have created Atmotube, because it was the time they need to do something for themselves and not.
Trump told me that it was difficult to find the right outer shell to Atmotube, because much of what is produced from a 3D printer or manufactured in China will set off the detectors of toxic materials. The two founders went to China to find the right parts for the manufacturer Atmotube and said that the air was so bad there is never higher than 50 on the sensor all the time.
“The air was actually better in a factory, and not outside,” Trump told me then, behind the scenes. “This is unusual, because the air quality is generally better in the open air, but it was better in the room the whole time we were in Shenzhen. That should tell you something about the quality of the air there.”
The housing tube Atmotube is contructed of stainless steel, so it is not left to the signals.
“Every day, we unconsciously take more than 20 million breaths and do not even think about most of them. If we do not have the problems we do not think that we breathe in any, and how that in the air can affect our bodies, “said Trump. “Over time, the effects of carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds has been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, liver and brain damage and even cancer. As our air gets worse, more people are asthma or COPD-especially children and the elderly people. Most people do not find that they were exposed to toxic air up until it is too late, so we decided to create a beautiful and functional object that can easily become part of your life, alerting you to potential danger in the air. “
