Apple ID Locked for Security Reasons? Here’s How to Restore It

Whenever Apple suspects your account has been compromised or hacked, it suspends it and sends you a message that your account is locked “for security reasons.” You might see one of these alerts:

  • “This Apple ID has been disabled for security reasons”
  • “You can’t sign in because your account was disabled for security reasons”
  • “This Apple ID has been locked for security reasons”

Getting your Apple ID blocked is particularly inconvenient as your account and password are used throughout Apple’s network of services. Which means you won’t be able to read your mail or get the latest app from the App Store.

But it’s all for your own good, because Apple typically denies access to your account when somebody enters your password incorrectly too many times. In that case, your Apple ID is automatically locked to protect your security. Follow these simple steps to unlock your Apple ID when it has been blocked for security reasons.

Unlock a Disabled Apple ID

Follow these steps to reset your passwords:

  • Open Safari on a Mac.
  • Visit Apple’s iForgot site.
  • Enter the First Name, Last Name and existing Email Address in respective fields.
  • Click Next.
  • If you have two-step verification enabled for Apple ID, you need to use your Recovery Key, which you should have stored somewhere.
  • Once found, enter the number and click Next.
  • Select the phone number used for two-step verification and click Continue.
  • Enter the Verification Code and press Continue.
  • Now, input the New Password and Confirm Password fields.
  • Click Reset Password.
  • You will now have reset the password for your Apple ID, thus granting you access to your account. After you’ve change your password, you might need to update it in iCloud settings on your devices.

Update your Password on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Tap Settings > iCloud.
  2. Tap Edit, if asked.
  3. Enter your new password and tap Done.

Update your Password in Mac OS X

  1. Open System Preferences (Apple menu > System Preferences).
  2. Click iCloud.
  3. Click Sign Out.
  4. Enter your new password and click Sign In.

You may also be asked to enter the new password as required in Mail, FaceTime, iTunes and other services. But, once you enter your new password, they will remember it for later.
